n 15th May – Nakba Day – 2022, the so-called #Bristol7 occupied the Bristol headquarters of Elbit Systems UK, which manufactures weapons and surveillance used by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank.

Two of the Palestine Action activists involved were dissidents of Jewish descent, raised in the Israeli Zionist system, who broke free to resist in solidarity with their fellow human beings in Palestine.

Dr Stav Sinai researched the sociology of apartheid and oppression, and Ronnie Barkan joined resistance movements protecting Palestinians under illegal occupation, before travelling to teach.

After their arrest in Bristol, they both spent a month on remand, and then nearly a year on house arrest.

As with many recent protest-related trials, almost all lawful excuses were excluded by the judge, and they were found guilty of criminal damage and burglary after a four-week trial. They received suspended sentences of two years and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1000 each.

They are also ordered to pay compensation of £5000 to Elbit, but are challenging this as unlawful, because of the company’s complicity in war crimes and genocide.

While the trial in Bristol was taking place, the International Criminal Court made its historic judgement that there was a case to answer and a probability that Israel was committing genocide.
